Price Guide by Room Size

These totals use my mid-range easy-clean carpet (£21/m²) with 10mm Cloud Nine underlay, standard fitting, and a 10% waste allowance — the same way my online price estimator calculates it. The low end of each range is basic-grade carpet; the high end is wool.

A quick note on hall, stairs and landing jobs: these are priced on inspection because winders (curved steps), spindles and landing shapes change the labour significantly. A straight staircase is quicker than a Victorian winder — that's just honest pricing.

What Actually Affects Your Price

• 1. Carpet quality. The biggest factor by far. An easy-clean polypropylene twist at £15/m² and an 80/20 wool at £40/m² can nearly triple the material cost of the same room.
• 2. Underlay. Never skip it, and never reuse the old stuff — I've written a full guide on why. Good underlay makes a mid-range carpet feel luxurious and last years longer.
• 3. Stairs and winders. Stair work is slow, precise labour. Every step is hand-cut, folded and stretched individually.
• 4. Subfloor condition. Loose floorboards, damp concrete or old adhesive residue need sorting before anything goes down. Whether it's a Victorian terrace in Streatham or a new build in Sutton, this comes up a lot.
